S...do I take it to a high end shop for an estimate, pocket the money, sell the car and get something else?

Drift stitch that up and let your son do a rally course or two...

I guess that depends on whether or not its a manual or an automatic :P

Why not just have your son keep driving it as is?

That car can’t be worth much. If the hood safely latches, I say your boy just drives it as is.

Holy shit that wasn’t a love tap.

Take it to a high end shop so they don’t try and stretch it to not get totaled. The fact that hood is bent is worrying so make sure it gets a proper estimate.

Does your son work so he could contribute to a new car payment. A regular flavor Golf TSI would be good. Or hell, even a CPO Golf TDI. If there is still stock left you can get an insanely low mileage one and the mea culpe warranty is insane and basically covers any mechanical fault.

Damage looks to be just visual. On first sight I can’t see anything badly bent except for the bonnet.

If the kid really likes and wants it to keep it, I don’t think it’ll be too unreasonable to get it fixed. :)

... Unless that tiny amount of damage costs a fortune. :O

Get an estimate and if it’s just cosmetic then find junkyard and/or part-out hood to put it back together for cheap. As long as nothing in the frame is bent, just keep sending it.

Also, this may be the one time where cheap eBay knock-off parts are a better value than finding OEM replacement trim pieces, like that cracked grill. Bonus is that it’s already intimation carbon fiber so hit it with a few layers of additional clear coat and leave as-it.

I'm curious how that would constitute fraud. If a reputable shop provides a legitimate estimate for damages and he chooses not to fix he is free to do so. The only thing different is there's no insurance carrier reducing strong arming the body shop to lower its rate so the carrier can mitigate its loss so they don't have to properly indemnify their insured.

If he wants to keep it, maybe just take the insurance and get a junkyard hood and grill? Obviously there’s more damage than that, but so long as that beam in front of the radiator isn’t bent so much that the hood won’t latch, I’d imagine it would look adequate.

Otherwise I say just have the body shop fix it. I know you wanted to get rid of this car, but I’m not sure that’s really a great way to do things.

How would that be fraud? The insurance would still be making him whole for real damages.

Involve the carriers.

T here’s over two grand with the front plastic and the non-repairable hood. The core support’s folded so that’s an automatic trip to the frame jig. Especially since the hood opens and closes. Means the whole structure’s out of true and must be checked.

50/50 on getting totaled. Not going to be cheap.

Look again. Upper core support folded, and the hood opens and closes. Has to get checked for frame true at minimum. Probably it’s fine, but it still has to be checked.

100% drive as is. If no airbags deployed you are solid. Still pocket that money though and put it towards a new ride down the line.

Are the buckle zones along the fender seams in the engine bay shifted or is it just damage to the nose facia and hood? If just the nose and hood then go find a local pull a part and have some fun. You can also swap out bumper bars if it buckled. Not hard.  Good experience for the boy. It’s not an unusual color.

It got hit harder than it looked from the original post. This certainly feels like a take the money and move on kind of scenario.

In the alternative, got any interest in rallycross? T hat would be a fun use for the car, and even more so when you’re not worried about beating up the car.

Those pictures make me very glad that the radiator/core support in my Volvo is a separate fiberglass piece, and there is no steel structure there to get mangled in a minor front ender.

Why should the insurance company only have to pay for the cost of a half- assed repair? As long as their rates are reasonable for a qu al ity repair, I don’t see any problem. If he was slipping them some cash to report a higher repair cost, that would be fraud. But if he’s just getting their estimate for normal good-quality   work, where’s the issue?

I just read it as a shop that’s more expensive, but not fraudulently so.

Get estimate, cash check, Gambler 500, and sell whatever’s left.

Ensure you codrive and on a minimum of three occasions tell your son to just send it.

I’d definitely get an estimate and go from there. It might be time to pass it along if it’s not safe anymore. If it’s compromised and he gets in an accident it could be a lot worse.
